Mixing cow dung and water to insulate a youth center in Lesotho

I graduated from the University of Virginia in May of 2005, with dual degrees in History and Government. I spent a year teaching English in Brazil and then traversed the East Coast of Africa via public transport for six months. During this time, I met The General. Despite obvious melanin discrepancies, The General reminded me of my Granddad. I befriended his youngest son, who informed me that none of his Father’s stories have been recorded. We both agreed that had to change.

I returned to America in December of 2006 and immediately joined our version of the “real world.” I became Executive Assistant to renowned Broadway and film Director Kenny Leon. Kenny’s great social conscience inspired many in the entertainment industry, and I was proud to be associated with his projects. After eighteen months, I left the position to take a writers’ course in New York and write my travel memoirs from my time abroad. It was during this time when I remembered my promise to The General’s son to help record his father’s story.

While visiting The General’s tea farm, they outfitted me with a big wicker basket and taught me how to pick tea leaves. The entire farm stopped to watch me pick tea. They said, “Ah. You are the best white worker we have ever seen!!” I smiled, flattered. I reflected on the compliment for a moment before asking, “But, have you seen any other white workers?” They tried not to smile and said, “No, but you are very good.”

In March of this year, I returned to tea farm to defend my title of “The best white worker” – oh, and to document The General’s life. I collected nearly 100 hours of material interviewing The General, and I’m working now to transcribe and organize the material. I look forward to developing The General History Project and learning more about our world through the preservation of oral and cultural histories.
